About the Item

A rare Treben stool by architect Erik Asmussen, developed for Waldorf painting studios in Sweden, mid-20th century. Conceived at the intersection of pedagogy and architecture, the design reflects an anthroposophical approach to making, where movement, balance and material presence are integral to the act of painting. Examples of this model have been exhibited at the ArkDes in Stockholm. Produced for institutional use and rarely appearing on the open market, the Treben stool occupies a distinct position between functional sculpture and architectural thinking. Executed in solid pine, the form is reduced and rigorously constructed without hardware or nails. Stability is achieved through triangulation and the inherent strength of the material—an approach proven through decades of continuous use by generations of students. The surface is finished in layered lasur, built up in tonal variations of blue and green to create optical depth, and sealed with beeswax. Produced for institutional use in limited numbers and rarely seen on the open market. Asmussen’s work and architectural philosophy are documented in Erik Asmussen, Architect by Gary J. Coates, Max Plunger, and Susanne Siepl-Coates.
