About the Item

When the Art Deco movement reached major Chinese cities like Tianjin and Shanghai, the design aesthetic that emerged was the perfect intersection of European modernism and Ming-dynasty refinement. These elegant Shanghai Deco side chairs are a product of the era, dated to 1930s Canton and finely crafted of sumptuous hardwood and marble. While the simple, square seats recall traditional Chinese stools, the chair backs are distinctly Shanghai Deco - sculpted with elaborate carvings and romantic bentwood curves. Surrounding an inset panel of black & white marble, the cloud-like swirls and botanical flourishes imbue the chair with sinuous movement, suggestive of Art Nouveau influences.
