About the Item

Exposed end-grain through-tenons punctuate the heavy timber slab of this small Welsh vernacular fireside chair, showcasing traditional country joinery at its most direct. The backrest is formed from four gently tapered, rounded spindles socketed directly into the thick seat base and capped with a subtly curved crest rail. Each joint is secured with visible dowels, creating an honest, utilitarian structure unburdened by ornamental mouldings or complex cabinetmaking trickery. The seat itself is hewn from a single piece of solid oak measuring 5 cm in thickness, displaying prominent natural grain contours and an undulating, tactile surface. It tapers gently from 28.5 cm across the front edge to 26.5 cm at the rear, with a front-to-back depth of 26.5 cm. The side and front edges have been pared and softened by hand, bearing the subtle irregularities typical of regional 19th-century workshop tools rather than mechanical production. Beneath the seat, four stout, rounded legs splay outwards to create a stable footprint measuring 31 cm front to back at floor level. Because vernacular country cottages often featured uneven flagstone or beaten earth floors around an open hearth, this flared four-legged arrangement provided dependable stability. The low seat height of 33 cm was specifically suited to tending open fires, sitting beneath smoke levels, and conducting household tasks close to the hearth. The oak has been meticulously dry-scraped by hand to strip away accumulated layers of historic household paint, exposing the raw, weathered figure of the wood beneath a soft waxed finish. Faint traces of green, blue, and reddish pigments remain embedded deep in the crevices and lower turned sections of the legs, providing authentic physical testimony to its working domestic life. Measuring 65 cm in overall height and 41.5 cm across the crest rail, this 4 kg chair survives as a robust example of British rural craft. We ship internationally, tracked.
