About the Item

A charming antique Dutch corner chair in oak, made in the Netherlands around 1920 and built entirely from hand-turned bobbin elements. The chair has been given a newly woven rush seat, so it is ready to use and to enjoy for many years to come. Corner chairs, sometimes called roundabout chairs, were designed to sit diagonally, with one leg pointing forward and the backrest wrapping around two sides. That clever layout makes them surprisingly comfortable and ideal for filling an empty corner, sitting at a desk or dressing table, or placed beside a fireplace as an occasional chair. The low, curved back rail rests on rows of turned spindles, and the four legs are joined by bobbin-turned stretchers that give the piece its rhythmic, almost sculptural look. Bobbin turning has a long history in Dutch, English and Flemish furniture, and this chair carries on that tradition in a rural, unpretentious way. The oak has a warm reddish-brown tone with a soft, worn surface from decades of use, and the turned details catch the light beautifully. Because the rush is new it still has a light, slightly green tint; natural rush mellows to a golden straw colour over time. In an interior, the chair works wonderfully in a country or farmhouse setting, but it also adds texture and character to a modern or minimalist room. Think of it next to Wabi Sabi ceramics, a linen sofa, a Shaker-style table or a clean Scandinavian desk. Fans of English country antiques, Arts and Crafts furniture, Flemish and French provincial pieces and the turned chairs of the Dutch vernacular tradition will all recognise its appeal. It is also a good match for anyone collecting bobbin furniture, spool furniture or rustic folk seating. Dimensions: height 66 cm, width 43 cm, depth 43 cm, seat height 36 cm. The chair is solid and stable, with the age-related wear you would expect on an antique piece. Please see the condition notes and the photographs for details. De Huiszwaluw ships worldwide. Every piece is packed carefully by us, and we are always happy to send more photos or answer any questions.
