Mid-Century French Settee by Jean Pascaud & Vadim Androusov, 1940s
Mid-Century French Settee by Jean Pascaud & Vadim Androusov, 1940s

Mid-Century French Settee by Jean Pascaud & Vadim Androusov, 1940s

By Vadim Androusov, Jean Pascaud

Located in Queens, NY

French mid-century dark mahogany settee with gilt bronze sabot feet and armrest supported by gilt bronze eagles with brown upholstery. Signed Jean Pascaud, by Vadim Androusov (ref: Les Decorateurs des annee 40, pg 172). Jean Pascaud was born in Rouen in 1903. He took a degree in engineering from the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, but his passion for furniture and décor, and the influence of his father in law, Auguste Bluysen, (then President of the Société des Architectes Modernes), led Pascaud to abandon a more traditional career and take up furniture design instead. By the late 1920s Pascaud regularly at the Salon des Tuileries, at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, and the Arts Ménagers.  His work is simple, yet technically ambitious and brilliant; his pieces are impressively large, but aesthetically balanced. Vadim Androusov was born in St. Petersburg in 1895. He was a grandson of the archeologist Schliemann. He arrived in Paris in 1920 and took classes at La Grande Chaumière academy; Bourdelle was one of his professors. His first sculptures date from 1925 and depict female figures and characters drawn from classical antiquity. He rarely used bronze, preferring terracotta, plaster, wood, and stone. He showed his creations at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants. While a sculptor, he also collaborated with interior decorators and created wall-mounted light fixtures, furniture pulls...

Settee 3-Seat 1st-Tier French Empire Mahogany Upholstered in Horsehair

Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK

OBJECT RECORD Object Reference MN-HMM-11303 Classification Canapé d’apparat (Monumental Three-Seat Salon Settee) Period / Date Premier Empire / Early Restoration (Circa 1810–1820) Origin France (Parisian Imperial Workshop Tier) Primary Medium Premium Choice Flame Mahogany (Acajou Ronceux) Dimensions Height: 95 cm Width: 228 cm Depth: 70.5 cm Upholstery Status Re-upholstered in traditional horsehair textile with two matching loose bolsters CURATORIAL DESCRIPTION This monumental three-seat salon settee stands as a rare and exceptional exemplar of original preservation, boasting a structural form that is both remarkably bold and fluid. Every aspect of its ornamentation is executed with masterly precision. The defining artistic asset of this settee lies in the cabinetmaker's superlative selection and arrangement of the veneers. The craftsman purposefully utilized museum-grade flame mahogany veneers (acajou ronceux) that have been meticulously bookmatched across the entirety of the framework. By masterfully mirroring consecutive leaves of the timber fIguring, the dramatic vertical and horizontal grain patterning lines up flawlessly. Consequently, the vast expanses of the front seat rail, back crest, and arms read visually as one singular, continuous piece of timber. This technical tour de force creates tremendous visual depth, accentuating the settee's magnificent historic colour and unblemished original patina. The architectural configuration features a subtly shaped backrest, defined by an elevated solid mahogany cresting section positioned above three tightly upholstered back panels. The composition is flanked by two striking, out-scrolled cylindrical...
