About the Item

This is a good late 18th Century English Oak Stool, dished seat , glorious colour. Trying to find good genuine English Georgian stool is difficult as many have not survived and far fewer were made, than chairs of the same period. The best aspect of this "Country" Georgian stool is its colour and patination, after having been used extensively for nearly 250 years. A Provincial stool, dished seat, square inside chamfered legs, stretchers and metal tension rods beneath the seat to strengthen the pegged construction. Overall a great example of Georgian English country oak with a lovely mellow colour.

Fine Antique Queen Anne Oak and Elm Joint Stool, circa 1700

Fine Antique Queen Anne Oak and Elm Joint Stool, circa 1700

Located in Nottingham, GB

Fine Queen Anne Oak and Elm Joint Stool, circa 1700 Material: Oak, Elm A charming and highly original Queen Anne period joint stool dating to circa 1700, traditionally constructed from oak and elm and displaying wonderfully warm colour and a beautifully established natural patina. The stool retains its original timbers throughout together with its original pegged joints, preserving the integrity and character of its early construction. The well-shaped original seat board and distinctive turned barrel legs are crafted from oak, while the seat rails and substantial supporting stretchers are constructed from elm. This combination of native timbers gives the stool considerable visual character and reflects traditional provincial furniture-making techniques of the period. The four turned barrel legs are united by blocked stretchers, creating a strong and robust framework. The subtly splayed stance provides additional stability while giving the stool an attractive and well-balanced silhouette. The timber has developed a particularly appealing warm and rich colour over more than three centuries, with natural variations in grain, tone and historic surface contributing greatly to its character. Of wonderfully useful proportions, the stool can function as traditional seating while also serving as a small occasional table, decorative stand or bedside piece within both period and contemporary interiors. Presented in excellent antique condition considering its circa 1700 origin. The stool remains sturdy and solid, with a small historic surface shake to the edge of one stretcher. This does not extend through the timber and is old and stable. The survival of the original timbers, pegged construction and beautifully aged surface makes this a particularly appealing example of early English provincial furniture...
