About the Item

A superb late 18th-century George III style mahogany bureau bookcase, dating to circa 1790, displaying the refined proportions, craftsmanship and understated elegance associated with fine English furniture of the period. The bookcase features a beautifully figured mahogany veneered upper section with a pair of elegant blind-panelled doors, each with shaped moulded detailing. The doors open to reveal adjustable shelving, providing practical storage for books, decorative objects and collections. The lower bureau section incorporates a beautifully fitted interior with an arrangement of small drawers and pigeonholes surrounding the central writing area, complete with a leather-lined writing slope. Beneath are three spacious graduated drawers, each fitted with attractive brass handles and escutcheons, while the whole piece is raised on shaped bracket feet. The rich colour, warm patina and attractive grain of the mahogany create a striking visual presence, complemented by the elegant brass fittings and architectural detailing throughout. A fine example of Georgian-inspired cabinetmaking, this bureau bookcase would make an impressive addition to a library, study, drawing room or period interior.
