About the Item

An exceptional Dutch rococo burr walnut marquetry bureau bookcase cabinet dating to circa 1780. This monumental eighteenth-century Dutch rococo burr walnut marquetry bureau bookcase cabinet represents the absolute pinnacle of luxury continental cabinetmaking. This magnificent object is a masterfully crafted double-hooded secretaire bookcase, often referred to as a bureau cabinet. To someone who has not seen this Dutch rococo burr walnut marquetry bureau bookcase cabinet in person, it can be described as a towering, sculptural masterpiece of European furniture art. The lower section features a dramatic, undulating bombé-fronted commode with three long graduated drawers resting on powerful, hand-carved hairy lion paw feet. The upper section consists of a double-door bookcase with elegant, scrolled glazed frames that elegantly reveal the interior, all crowned by an exquisite architectural double-hooded pediment with an asymmetrical central shell carving. What makes this specific piece extraordinary is the breathtaking density and museum-grade quality of its floral and figurative marquetry. Every visible surface of the rich walnut and burr walnut veneer serves as a canvas for elaborate, multi-colored fruitwood inlays. The slant-front or fall-front opens to reveal a spectacular, fully fitted theater-style interior. This writing surface is adorned with an incredibly detailed inlaid classical urn overflowing with flowers, surrounded by perched parrots, songbirds, cornucopias, and playful cherubs. The inner panels of the large upper doors feature equally stunning marquetry panels depicting classical vases, making it a highly valuable work of decorative art. For a potential buyer, it is highly useful to know that the interior of the upper bookcase is lined with a luxurious, vibrant green velvet fabric that provides a stunning visual contrast to the rich walnut wood. This velvet-lined upper section comes equipped with sturdy, fabric-covered wooden shelves that are absolutely perfect for displaying a personal library or art collection. Please note that the antique leather-bound books shown in the photographs are for display purposes only and are not included in the sale of this cabinet. The writing desk compartment features a central architectural niche flanked by stepped miniature drawers and hidden secret compartments. All the heavy, finely chased gilt-bronze handles and decorative escutcheons are original to the piece, featuring intricate rococo scrollwork. The cabinet is constructed in two separate sections (the lower commode and the upper bookcase) which allows for much safer transport and easier installation in a home. While the specific master cabinetmaker remains anonymous, as was typical for many workshops in eighteenth-century Holland, the execution points directly to a premier Amsterdam or Hague workshop. This item perfectly exemplifies the pinnacle of the regional Dutch style. During this period, Dutch master cabinetmakers embraced elaborate, curved shapes and dense floral inlays with incredible dedication, creating pieces that were much more opulent and complex than the straighter classical styles found in contemporary France or England. This piece has been cherished in a private European collection for generations. While it has not been featured in public museum exhibitions, its form and decorative motifs are identical to the celebrated masterworks documented in standard reference books on historic Dutch furniture. 385The condition of this antique cabinet is excellent. This Dutch rococo burr walnut marquetry bureau bookcase cabinet has been meticulously preserved. The structural integrity is completely stable, the drawers and slant-front operate smoothly, and the original gilt-bronze hardware has a beautiful, authentic patina. There is only minor, natural wear consistent with its age of nearly two hundred and fifty years, which only enhances its historical character and charm.
