About the Item

An elegant and unusual North European corner cabinet dating from the first half of the 19th century, circa 1830–1850. The cabinet is veneered in richly figured birch with warm amber-golden tones, contrasted by black ebonized moldings and details. Its tall, slender architectural form is characteristic of the Biedermeier and late Empire period. The cabinet is composed of an upper and lower storage section, separated by a distinctive open arched niche. Both sections have double paneled doors and fitted interior shelves. The interior has been painted in a soft blue tone, creating a beautiful contrast with the warm figured birch exterior. This blue finish was applied later and is not original to the cabinet; when this alteration was made is unknown. The cabinet is veneered in an exceptionally richly figured birch, displaying a remarkably dense combination of bird’s-eye and burl-like figuring. Large, uninterrupted areas of veneer of this quality are uncommon and would have required careful selection and skilled application by the cabinetmaker. The warm amber-golden surface is further emphasized by the contrasting ebonized moldings and details. With a height of 209 cm and corner measurements of only 54 × 54 cm, the cabinet has an impressive presence while taking up relatively little floor space. Its clean architectural lines make it suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. The exact country of origin is undocumented. Based on its design, construction and use of materials, the cabinet belongs to the North European furniture tradition and may be Dutch, North German or Scandinavian. The cabinet retains a rich antique patina with wear, marks, old repairs and localized losses consistent with its age and use. There are old separations and repairs to parts of the rear construction, largely hidden when the cabinet is placed in a corner. The original locks and keys are no longer present. The doors open and close properly. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed impression of the condition. Dimensions Height: 209 cm / 82.28 in Width / corner measurement: 54 cm / 21.26 in Depth / corner measurement: 54 cm / 21.26 in Very good antique condition considering its age of nearly 200 years, with a rich patina and expected signs of age and use. The cabinet has undergone some repairs and maintenance during its long history, including work to parts of the base and rear construction. There are minor losses, old repairs, surface marks and age-related movement consistent with a piece of this age. The interior was painted blue at a later date. The original locks and keys are no longer present. The doors open and close properly. Overall, the cabinet presents very well and retains a strong, authentic antique character.

Fine Dutch Baroque Double Domed Walnut Cabinet, Hand-Crafted, 1700

Fine Dutch Baroque Double Domed Walnut Cabinet, Hand-Crafted, 1700

Located in Antwerp, BE

A very fine and rare burr walnut and walnut double domed cupboard; Holland, circa 1700. Resting on bracket feet, the base has two large drawers a pair of half - width drawers, protruding on the bottom and inlaid with cross banded geometric ornament. The doors have elegant protruding curly serpentine - shaped walnut ornament and are topped with finely carved low - relief walnut lambrequins in the Régence style under the double domed cornice. Each dome has an elegant molding transforming in its centre into a richly carved bracket. Together with the flat - topped corners and centre, these were meant to support a Chinese porcelain or Delft glazed earthenware set of 5 blue - and -white vases, called a ' kaststel ' in Dutch. The interior is typically executed in oak, with three interior drawers and shelves behind the cupboard doors. As was often the case, the bronze handles and keyholes were replaced later in the 18th century by more contemporary Louis XVI models. The interior drawers however, where it was not felt important as they were invisible when the doors were closed, still keep their original handles. The double dome is a rare feature in Dutch walnut cabinets...
