About the Item

A very rare and important piece of architectural history an original desk from the Levin residence an early Usonian house. In 1946 a group of four employees from the Upjohn company bought 47 acres outside of Kalamazoo Michigan and contacted the architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design and build homes on the site. The first house built was for Robert and Rea Levin, constructed in 1948 on the grounds now known as Parkwyn Village and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. There were only a few pieces of furniture from the Levin house that were not built-in and this desk was one of those pieces as most Usonian homes were constructed with built - in furniture a concept of Wright's after the Great Depression capturing his aspiration to create a democratic distinctly national style that was affordable and furniture was just another expense. This unique desk being one of those few pieces was made of different species of wood that Wright picked up off the building site to create this rare museum quality artifact. Remaining in the Levin family it's entire life the father when the house was sold took the four pieces of furniture as a keepsake reminder of the time he had with the architect and with his family in his prized house. Providence for the desk is, original to the Levin house 2816 Taliesin Drive Kalamazoo Michigan, to the wife Rae Levin after Roberts death, to son James Levin and to sister Ellen S. Levin this desk is from the estate of Ellen S. Levin purchased by Mainly Art Vintage Furniture. The last picture is of Frank Lloyd Wright, an owner of one of the other houses and Robert Levin owner of the desk at the time of construction.
