About the Item

With intricate carvings and original hardware, this antique sideboard from Shanxi province is a beautiful example of Chinese cabinetry. Dated to the mid-19th century, the coffer has a tapered shape that suggests it functioned as both an altar for ancestor worship and as a storage cabinet for clothes, textiles, and other household items. Crafted of elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the cabinet has a shallow, rectangular tabletop and provides ample storage with four drawers and interior shelving. Tapered spandrels flank the sides, carved in low relief with geometric scrollwork. The lower compartment opens by accordion doors with full moon brass hinges, folding to reveal two wide interior shelves. A lacquered finish darkens the exterior to a deep brown, now beautifully aged with subtle wear and a rich patina.
