About the Item

J.A.D.A Galerie presents: A French oak sideboard from the 1950s, built in the reconstruction years when provincial workshops were reducing their vocabulary to a few strong gestures. This one keeps the joinery of a traditional buffet and drops almost all of its ornament. The three doors are carved in close parallel ribs. On the two outer doors the ribs run horizontally across the panel, while on the narrow central door they run vertically, so the front reads as three bands of texture set against each other. A slab of black marble with heavy white veining covers the top and overhangs the case on all sides. The oak below is left raw, pale and open grained, and the case is raised on four splayed legs that taper toward the floor. Behind the doors the interior is plain, with a shelf to one side. It works along a dining room wall, in a hallway, or as a serving surface where the marble takes daily use.
