About the Item

Attributed to Tue Poulsen for Haslev Møbelsnedkeri, round coffee table, teak, glazed ceramic tiles, Denmark, 1960s. This round Danish Mid-Century Modern coffee table or cocktail table is attributed to Tue Poulsen for Haslev Møbelsnedkeri and dates from the 1960s. It has a solid teak frame, and the top is set with glazed ceramic tiles in earthy browns, ochre, sage and slate blue. The tile top makes the table. Large and small ceramic discs, each incised with fine radiating lines, are laid together across the surface. Smaller cross-hatched pieces fill the spaces between them, with flashes of cobalt blue here and there. The glazes vary from disc to disc, so the surface reads almost like a piece of studio pottery. A broad, rounded teak rim frames the tiles. It is built in curved sections, and the joins between them follow the circle. Four square legs are set just inside the rim, which keeps the profile low and solid. The generous round top has room for books, ceramics and a tray, and works well between a sofa and armchairs, where the round shape makes it easy to move around. The warm teak and earthy, hand-made glazes suit Scandinavian and Organic Modern interiors. The tile surface also brings texture to a wabi-sabi or eclectic room.
