About the Item

A striking Mid-Century Modern tessellated bone coffee or end table crafted in the style of Enrique Garcel, celebrated for his luxurious organic materials and sculptural forms. The table features an elegant oval silhouette clad entirely in hand-cut tessellated bone tiles, meticulously arranged to create a subtle mosaic pattern with beautiful tonal variations. The clever expanding design allows the table to open into a two-tiered configuration, revealing a secondary surface beneath the top—adding both functionality and visual interest. A thin inlaid border accentuates the perimeter of each tier, enhancing the refined geometric composition. Tessellated bone furniture became popular in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly through Garcel’s designs produced in Colombia, where artisans assembled natural bone fragments into seamless decorative surfaces that evoke both modernist minimalism and organic texture. With its clean lines, sculptural presence, and warm neutral palette, this piece works beautifully as a coffee table, cocktail table, or oversized end table, complementing interiors ranging from modern and Hollywood Regency to contemporary organic design. Dimensions :  15” H x 22.25” W x 13" D About the designer : Enrique Garcel is a renowned Colombian designer celebrated for his exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs in the realm of luxury furniture and decorative arts. Born on March 10, 1930, in Lima, Peru, Garcel developed a passion for art and design at an early age. He began his formal education in architecture at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Lima but soon realized that his true passion lay in furniture design and decided to pursue it as a career. He traveled to Europe to study under the guidance of esteemed designers and master craftsmen, honing his skills and expanding his knowledge of traditional and contemporary design techniques. In the late 1950s, Garcel returned to Peru and established his own furniture workshop, where he started creating unique and exquisite pieces that blended traditional Colombian craftsmanship with modern design elements. His work gained recognition for its meticulous attention to detail and the use of luxurious materials such as bone, goatskin, and shagreen. Garcel's designs often featured bold geometric forms and a distinctive Art Deco revival style, making his pieces highly sought after by collectors and interior designers. Garcel's collaborations with prestigious design firms, such as James Rosen for Pace, further elevated his profile in the design world. His pieces, including bamboo and chrome lounge chairs, tessellated bone armchairs, and lacquered goatskin tables, exemplify his commitment to combining functionality with artistic expression. Today, Enrique Garcel's work continues to be celebrated for its timeless elegance and exceptional quality. His pieces remain highly coveted by collectors and are featured in prominent design galleries and auctions worldwide. Garcel's legacy as a master designer endures, influencing contemporary design and inspiring future generations of artisans and designers.
