About the Item

This long and narrow Chinese altar table was made around 1900, during the late Qing dynasty. The piece is crafted entirely from solid elmwood, a timber widely used in China for its strength, attractive grain, and suitability for traditional joinery. The table displays the restrained and well-balanced design characteristic of traditional Chinese furniture. Its rectangular top features a recessed central panel set within a broad frame. The outer edge is composed of several molded layers, giving the top a refined architectural appearance. Beneath it is a simple straight apron, supported at either end by rounded spandrels that transition naturally into the legs. The base consists of four slender, rounded legs connected by two cylindrical stretchers on each end. This construction provides stability while preserving the table’s distinctive open and elegant silhouette. Its traditional construction and restrained decoration emphasize the harmonious proportions, craftsmanship, and character of the aged elmwood. Tables of this type were traditionally positioned against a wall and used as altar tables. They might have held incense burners, candlesticks, flowers, ancestral portraits, and other ritual or symbolic objects. In Chinese interiors, such tables could also serve as ceremonial display tables in reception halls or ancestral rooms. The table retains a dark reddish-brown to nearly black finish. Years of use and repeated maintenance have naturally worn the surface in selected areas, revealing warmer reddish-brown tones and portions of the underlying wood. A particularly attractive, time-worn patina has developed along the edges, legs, and structural elements. The visible wear, variations in color, and traces of use are consistent with the table’s age and original purpose and contribute greatly to its authentic character. The table was carefully cleaned in our workshop, with close attention paid to preserving the original finish, natural signs of use, and aged patina. The wood was then treated with a fresh protective coat of furniture wax, enhancing the rich color and natural appearance of the elmwood. No structural repairs were required; the table is sturdy and ready for use. With its long, narrow proportions, the table is highly suitable for contemporary use as a console table, wall table, or display table. It works equally well in a traditional interior or a restrained modern setting, where its weathered surface and clear Chinese design can be fully appreciated.
