About the Item

Large Vitra Solvay Table by Jean Prouve. Also known as the Table S.A.M. Bois. Dark oak finish. Originally designed in 1941. Seats 6-8 Vitra plaque/label is present underneath table. Table was ordered for a Miami hotel project but was never used. It is in excellent condition. This is the large version. Retail price is around $15,000 plus tax, tariff, and delivery and 12 week lead time. During the years of 1941 and 1942, the Ateliers Jean Prouvé planned and executed a number of interior design projects for the Solvay chemical company in France. Numerous pieces of furniture were developed in connection with this commission, including a table made of wood that exemplifies Prouvé’s construction methods: its structural details illustrate the interplay of forces and stresses – similar to the later design of the EM Table, whose metal legs distinguish it from its predecessor. Due to the scarcity of metal during World War II, the “Table Salle à Manger Bois” was designed with wooden legs, leading to the name Table S.A.M. Bois. More info: Jean Prouvé was trained as a metal artisan before expanding his work to include the full panoply of design-from letter openers to lighting to prefabricated houses. His designs encompass nearly everything that lends itself to industrial fabrication. He opened his first workshop in 1924 and, by 1947, had his own factory. Prouvé is also known for serving as the chairman of the committee that selected Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers' design for the Centre Pompidou in 1971. Ten examples of Prouvé's work are included in MoMA's collection.

Christian Liaigre Ebonized Oak "Courier" Dining Table

By Christian Liaigre

Located in Philadelphia, PA

We are pleased to present a Christian Liaigre for Holly Hunt "Courier" Dining Table. This table features an open grain ebonized oak wood that has aged gracefully over time. It is not pitch black, but a dark espresso table with black undertones. This table was originally designed by Liaigre for his own house in Ile de Re, France, showcasing his impeccable taste and attention to detail. This long dining table is a stunning piece that blends minimalist design with rustic farmhouse charm. The rectangular top of the table features beveled sides, adding an elegant touch to the overall design. The trestle-style base, with its thick x-form legs, provides sturdy support and creates a striking visual statement. The excellent joinery and craftsmanship can be seen throughout. Ships from Philadelphia. Good overall condition with some imperfections. We have the largest collection in the US of previously-owned Liaigre pieces. While this example does not retain the makers stamp, it is unmistakably an authentic Courier table...
