About the Item

An English walnut folding side table from the 19th century, featuring an oval hinged top and an elegant collapsible base. The two-part top presents a simple, warm walnut surface whose restrained character allows the sculptural form of the support below to take center stage. The table is raised on two pairs of gracefully curved supports arranged in an X-form and joined at their intersections with circular pivot fittings. Their sweeping profiles create a series of open curves beneath the top, lending the table an unusually light and animated silhouette. Shaped horizontal stretchers connect the supports below, adding both stability and a subtle decorative element. Designed to fold, the hinged top closes together as the base collapses, allowing the table to be stored nearly flat when not in use. The walnut displays warm brown tones with variations in color and patina throughout. At 27 inches wide, the table offers a useful surface without occupying significant floor space. Its combination of practical folding construction, graceful lines and warm walnut makes it an appealing 19th century English occasional table for use beside a chair or sofa.
