About the Item

Unattributed, Brazil, c. 1950s. This table distils a mid-century proposition in which modest industrial means are resolved into a refined domestic object: a planar hardwood top articulated by a vivid orange Formica surface and a pared hardwood surround, supported on a rhythmic arrangement of slim iron legs. The composition reads as an exercise in proportion and contrast — a boldly colored horizontal plane held aloft by a visibly structural, almost skeletal undercarriage. Formally spare, the table is organized around a rectangular top with gently rounded corners that emphasize horizontal calm. The slender iron supports converge into trussed, inverted-V groupings that give the piece a taut, geometric cadence; the negative space beneath the top is deliberate, allowing the iron to read as both structure and visual detail rather than as applied hardware. The result is an object whose clarity of line and economy of parts produce a confident, architectural presence. Materials and craft are foregrounded. The top presents a durable yellow Formica field — the defining planar device — set within a hardwood surround whose edgework and sightlines are carefully resolved. The iron legs are neatly formed and finished, their precise bending and pairing evidencing technical clarity. Execution privileges material integrity: the Formica remains the practical surface while the hardwood and iron articulate the table’s constructional intent. Function is integrated with form: the Formica surface offers a low-maintenance, resilient plane for daily use, while the slender iron base allows generous knee clearance and visual openness. Condition: in excellent vintage condition; the surface and structure present well with age-appropriate marks consistent with careful stewardship. Restoration, when undertaken, has been conservative and transparent.
