About the Item

Lert Klur-Aroon (Born 1933) – Original Skeleton Leaf Painting of Two Birds, Thailand A finely executed original skeleton leaf painting by Thai artist Lert Klur-Aroon (born 1933), depicting two birds perched among flowering branches. The composition is hand-painted on a carefully preserved skeleton leaf, a delicate and highly specialized medium that became one of the artist’s signatures. Presented in its original teak frame with the original artist’s label retained on the reverse. Born in Nakhon Sawan Province, Thailand, Klur-Aroon studied at the prestigious Poh Chang School of Arts & Crafts before continuing his artistic education at the Pirasri (Silpa) Art Institute, institutions that played a significant role in the development of modern Thai art. According to the original gallery label, he specialized in painting birds on preserved leaves and rice paper, subjects for which he became particularly well known. Skeleton leaf paintings require remarkable precision. The natural leaf is processed until only its intricate network of veins remains, creating an exceptionally fragile yet beautiful surface. The artist then applies the composition by hand, allowing the organic structure of the leaf to become an integral part of the artwork. The result is a harmonious combination of fine painting and natural material, making each work entirely unique. Works by Lert Klur-Aroon were widely appreciated by collectors of Southeast Asian decorative arts during the mid to late twentieth century and remain sought after for their craftsmanship, refined execution, and distinctive technique. This example is further enhanced by its original presentation and documented provenance through the surviving artist’s label. An elegant and highly decorative work that represents a distinctive chapter in twentieth-century Thai artistic tradition and would make a refined addition to any collection of Asian art or natural history-inspired decorative objects.

Billy Good Swedish Modernist Oil Painting on Wood Panel, Sweden, 1949

Billy Good Swedish Modernist Oil Painting on Wood Panel, Sweden, 1949

Located in Hammarö, SE

Mörsil, Sweden. A small village in Jämtland, surrounded by forests, mountains and the long winters of northern Sweden. It was here that Swedish artist and illustrator Billy Good spent his youth. And it is difficult to imagine a greater contrast to the painting he would create in 1949. There is nothing quiet about it. A monumental green face fills almost the entire composition. One eye looks outward while the other drifts sideways. A heavy red and blue mouth curves across the face, while dark lines divide its features into almost architectural planes. Then, in the lower corner, another figure appears. Small. Almost hidden. A pale face surrounded by red and yellow looks upward toward the enormous green presence beside it. The relationship between the two remains unexplained. That ambiguity is part of the painting’s extraordinary character. Painted in 1949, the work belongs to a fascinating moment in European art. The Second World War had ended only four years earlier, and artists across Europe were increasingly moving away from traditional representation toward abstraction, expressionism and fragmented interpretations of the human figure. Good’s painting seems to inhabit that same restless visual world. The face remains recognisable, yet it has been deliberately distorted. Perspective disappears. Colour becomes emotional rather than naturalistic. Green, yellow, red and blue collide across the surface, held together by powerful dark contours. Behind this striking modernist painting lies the story of an artist whose life and work are surprisingly little known today. Billy Good grew up in Mörsil in Jämtland before leaving for Stockholm during the 1940s, where he established himself as an illustrator and advertising artist. People, and particularly faces, appear to have remained a fascination throughout his life. Decades later, Good returned artistically to the community of his youth. He created 58 portraits of people connected with Mörsil, characters he remembered from growing up there during the 1920s and 1930s. He then transformed those portraits into something remarkable: a complete deck of playing cards. The blacksmith. The doctor. The skier. The accordion player. People from a small Swedish community became characters in Good’s own visual world. He also portrayed figures beyond Mörsil. Among his known graphic works is a portrait of Swedish football legend Nacka Skoglund, one of the country’s great sporting icons of the twentieth century. Seen against this background, the 1949 painting...

Billy Seay Airbrushed Parrot Lovers artwork (original airbrushed over a print) for the Turner Company, circa 1948, in the original white painted frame. This a great example of the post-WWII Hawaiian and tropical art/decorating boom. Great for vintage Art Deco dwellings and rattan-inspired rooms. The print is new old stock and has never been displayed until now. Bill Seay (1922-2012) started his working life as Billy Seay, a child actor, in the late silents and early talkies (“Kid Millions” with Eddie Cantor, “Topaze” with John Barrymore, and “The Unknown” with Lon Chaney and the young Joan Crawford, are the most noted of these films), then followed in his father’s footsteps as an artist, joining the designer Sacha Brastoff in his studio from 1952 to 1959, remaining a life-long friend and co...
