About the Item

This substantial sterling silver cuff by Navajo silversmith Johnathan Nez features exceptional stamp work on all four sides of the bracelet. The central section is defined by a band of closely spaced vertical parallel lines, creating a refined ribbed texture. Flanking this central band are repeating geometric motifs of small textured squares arranged in a precise grid pattern. Along both outer edges, the bracelet is finished with a scalloped, wave-like border that adds movement and contrast to the structured design. The interior of the cuff includes a stylized traditional Navajo motif alongside the artist’s signature. His older brother, acclaimed silversmith Leonard Nez, played a significant role in introducing him to jewelry making and remains an important influence in his artistic development. Johnathan and Leonard are the only siblings in their family who work in jewelry. He attended boarding school in Dilkon, Arizona, where he describes having a formative experience that taught him many important life lessons. In addition to guidance from his brother, Nez was also influenced by his father-in-law, Thomas Guerro, and his wife’s cousin, Leonard Plato, both of whom contributed to his growth as an artist. Nez is known for his appreciation of contemporary, clean lines and precise execution, qualities that are clearly reflected in his work. He often incorporates gold accents alongside silver. In 2007, he was awarded second place at the prestigious Santa Fe Indian Market for his concho belt. Coming from a family of ropers, Nez has a strong connection to rodeo culture. Today, however, he focuses much of his time on family life. Together with his wife, he is raising their five grandchildren following the passing of their parents. He is described by his family as a devoted and caring grandfather with a positive and grateful outlook on life.
