About the Item

Lovely Victorian Sterling Chatelaine circa 1870 with all the necessities for the modern woman. Today, everything is integrated into a PDA but your iphone still cant whistle, carry stamps or sewing needles like this period chateliane can. Chatelaines became the rage for women of every economic background in the 19th Century. They could be easily customized to your needs, whether you were a society hostess, nurse or secretary. Often fully intact and original chatelaines can tell the story of its owner and as well as her station in life. This particular chatelaine comes from a wealthy individual. The accessories are original to the clip (which is attached to a belt or waistband) and are indicative of the daily needs of this client. Attached are a very collectible notepad with celluloid date pages by the Shiebler company in the Aesthetic style as well as a stamp holder, pin holder (frog on lily pad), retractable pencil, rose decorated mirror, pen knife with scissors/blades and an engraved whistle. In the 19th Century, a massive industry was born supplying all sorts of trinkets, both practical and some purely decorative, to stock these Victorian daily assistants (VDA's). Excellent condition. 1870's USA.
