About the Item

The best jewelry of the late 1960s and 1970s was increasingly about form, texture and weight. Gold became sculpture: twisted, hammered, braided and deliberately substantial. Diamonds remained important, but they no longer necessarily dictated the design. This C’est Laudier ring captures that shift beautifully. A broad coil of richly textured 18 karat yellow gold wraps around the finger and rises into an oversized circular head. At its center, a white-gold dome is pavé-set with twenty brilliant-cut diamonds totaling approximately 0.75 carats, creating a cool, glittering counterpoint to the deeply worked gold. The contrast is particularly good. Rough against polished. Yellow against white. A tight cluster of diamonds surrounded by an almost rope-like, organic mass of gold. At approximately 16.4 grams, it has the satisfying weight expected of serious jewelry from the period. Nothing is tentative or delicate. C’est Laudier was associated with the Georg Lauer jewelry firm of Pforzheim, one of Germany’s historic centers of jewelry manufacture. Georg Lauer traces its history to 1895, while the Laudier name became particularly associated with bold, high-quality German jewelry of the later twentieth century. Surviving Laudier pieces show a strong preference for substantial goldwork, sculptural construction, playful motifs and technically ambitious designs, very much in step with the experimental mood of European jewelry in the 1960s and 70s.
