Manuel Robbe lived in Paris all his life, creating images that echoed the polished splendor of the Belle Epoque. He exhibited often at the Salons, first at the Société des Artistes Français (winning a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900) and after 1905 at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. As the turn of the century, critic Gabriel Moury noted, Robbe's favorite subject was the "modern woman," her costumes, and activities and the visual elegance of her world. Absorbing the influence of Impressionism, particularly Renoir, Robbe applied a sensitive painterly touch to techniques that fit with the new paradigm of mass production. He designed and printed posters for corsets and bicycles, seeing, like Toulouse-Lautrec, the artistic potential of the new commercial era. Robbe also created illustrations for humorous magazines and made colored etchings of the works of contemporary artists. He was a favorite artist of the celebrated Parisian print publisher Edmond Sagot, who promoted his work. Robbe was a pioneer of the à la poupée process, enabling an artist to print multiple colors from a single plate. He invented his engraving technique known as “sugar-life,” using a mixture of sugar, India ink and gum Arabic on Zinc plates. The plates were heated, intricately worked and color was applied with brushes made of rags; Robbe then used his fingers to perfect the tones. Such technical mastery allowed Robbe to make each image unique, imbued with a lushness and immediacy befitting of the era in which he lived.

White Hamburgh Grape: A Framed 19th C. Color Engraving by George Brookshaw
By George Brookshaw
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 19th century colored aquatint and stipple engraving finished by hand entitled "White Hamburgh Grape", drawn and engraved by George Brookshaw and published in London in 1812 as plate 60 in his 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. It depicts a cluster of pale green grapes still on the vine. The vine and leaves are shown in attractive shades of green and brown. The plant lays on a brown textured background with shadows to impart 3-dimensionality. The scene is reminiscent of an engraving in an 18th century artistically stylized human anatomy atlas. There is a light brown title rectangle in the lower center which is blank, suggesting this may be a more rare preproduction proof. There are wide white margins. This striking engraving is presented in a reddish brown decorative wood frame with a darker brown scroll-work outer trim and a gold-colored inner fillet and a thick light beige mat. The frame measures 26" high, 22" wide and 1.13" deep. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. There is a tiny spot in the lower margin on the left and another in the left margin. The print and frame are otherwise in excellent condition. There is a second Brookshaw engraving that is framed in identical moulding, although a slightly different size and a different color mat. It depicts a Silver Rock Melon. The two prints would make a striking display pairing...

"Woman, Boy and Goats", Original Signed Etching by John E. Costigan
By John Costigan
Located in New York, NY
This original, limited edition etching, was realized by the esteemed American artist John E. Costigan, who is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Philips Memorial Gallery in Washington and the Brooklyn Museum, to name only a few of the many institutions that feature his work. This print, with its highly considered composition and its loose style of figuration- deftly balances realism and abstraction- helps to explain his acclaim. This etching features a mother walking with her child and two goats in a forested glen. It is a Classic pastoral scene rendered in Costigan's inimitable style- somewhere between Theodore Rousseau and Thomas Hart Benton. These offer a beautiful glimpse of a bygone American pastoral...

From Wikipedia: "À la poupée is a largely historic intaglio printmaking technique for making colour prints by applying different ink colours to a single printing plate using ball-shaped wads of cloth, one for each colour. " Sometimes this manner of applying inks is called monoprint inking. By the nature of the hand application and blending of colors, each impressions varies to some degree. That's why it looks like a painting. This gives the finished etching a "painterly effect" that many find to be most pleasing. The artist was hugely popular in the 1970's and 1980's here in America, Manuel Robbe (Alphonse, a.k.a. Eugene Lafitte) 1872-1936 Born Alphonse Lafitte...
