About the Item

An elegant, hand-carved wooden pricket candlestick in a refined Neoclassical style, dating from circa 1780-1790, Italy. This stately candlestick immediately stands out due to its rare and original polychrome finish; a subtle light gray paint that is harmoniously combined with rich gilded details. The fluting on the shaft, the crisp rosettes on the tripartite base, and the finely carved acanthus leaves display the pure symmetry of the Neoclassical period. Beneath the beautifully time-worn gold leaf, the historic red clay bole has become wonderfully visible. The candlestick rests on three characteristic, powerfully carved claw feet. The top is equipped with an original wrought-iron pricket, and the loose, scalloped iron drip pan remains fully intact. The piece is in an honest, historically authentic condition with magnificent character. The underside of the base reveals the original artisanal woodwork and early stabilizations to the feet, providing clear material evidence of its genuine age and rich history. With its understated color palette and strong vertical lines, this historic object effortlessly complements almost any style of interior design. It creates a stunning juxtaposition alongside contemporary art, stands beautifully as a solitary statement piece on a deep windowsill, or brings historic atmosphere into a minimalist dining area.
