About the Item

Crown-form candle sconces surmount the heads of these sculptural porcelain figures, shaped as a mirrored pair of heraldic winged griffins. Arranged to face each other across a table or mantelpiece, the mythical creatures sit upright with their long tails curled around their lower flanks. Their open beaks, pricked ears, and swept-back wings convey an alert posture, while their clawed forelimbs firmly grip tall cartouche shields. Each shield displays an individually hand-painted armorial device depicting a griffin wielding an upright sword, surrounded by ornate gilded scrollwork and bordered with raised moulding. The glaze finish displays a smooth, reflective white ground decorated with detailed polychrome enamel work inspired by historical Italian maiolica conventions. Soft coral and salmon-pink striations pick out the feathered texture across the crested heads, arching necks, and wing pinions, contrasting with pale slip-toned torsos. Fine brushwork defines the facial features, including painted eyes, pointed gilt beaks, and darkened talons, providing crisp graphic definition against the lighter body contours. Each griffin rests its talons upon a spherical ceramic orb set atop a flaring socle and a substantial hexagonal plinth. These pedestal sections are ornamented with polychrome floral swags, foliate arabesques, and formal scroll friezes in ochre yellow, deep green, purple, and iron-red, all highlighted by burnished gilding. Gilt animal paw feet project from each corner of the plinth. The hollow underside exposes an iron tie-rod and retaining nut running through the centre, anchoring the multi-part ceramic assembly. To the base underside, each piece displays an underglaze blue crowned 'N' mark associated with the Neapolitan Capodimonte decorative tradition, made in Italy during the late nineteenth century. Each candlestick stands 34 cm high with a base width of 12 cm. The pair remains structurally sound, with the original enamel colours and gilded accents well preserved across both figures. Antique German Porcelain Jester Figural Candelabra, Dresden Style, circa 1900

Antique German Porcelain Jester Figural Candelabra, Dresden Style, circa 1900

Located in Nottingham, GB

A wonderfully whimsical and highly decorative pair of antique German porcelain figural candelabra, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century and executed in the elaborate Dresden tradition. Each candelabrum is modelled with a seated court jester in colourful theatrical costume, amusingly depicted playing an animal as a musical instrument—one with a cat and the other with a pig. The figures are surrounded by exuberant flowering branches rising to twin candle sconces, creating an imaginative combination of sculpture, humour and functional decorative porcelain. The porcelain is richly hand-painted in a vibrant palette of turquoise, pink, blue, green, yellow and gilt highlights. Particularly attractive details include the jesters' elaborate multicoloured caps, striped costumes, individually applied flowers and scrolling Rococo-style bases. The floral-encrusted branches and petal-form candle supports are characteristic of the highly ornamental porcelain associated with Dresden and other important German ceramic centres. The unusual subject matter gives the pair considerable character, while their complementary compositions make them particularly effective displayed together on a mantelpiece, console or dining table. An engaging and distinctive pair of antique German porcelain candelabra...
