About the Item

Three-piece “Flash” porcelain ensemble designed by Dorothy Hafner for Rosenthal Studio-Line, comprising two vases in complementary sizes and a matching triangular ashtray. The ivory porcelain is animated by black zigzag lines, checkerboard details and sharply contrasting blocks of red, blue, yellow, green and violet. Hafner designed “Flash” in 1982, and Rosenthal introduced the series in 1984. Its irregular geometry, energetic colour and playful approach to functional porcelain place it firmly within 1980s Postmodern design and the wider visual culture associated with the Memphis era. “Flash” became Hafner’s signature porcelain series, and examples are represented in the collections of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and the National Gallery of Victoria. The two tapered vases create a strong graphic pairing, while the broader ashtray anchors the arrangement. Displayed together, the pieces form a coordinated composition for a sideboard, console or coffee table. The ashtray may also be used as a decorative bowl or catchall. Dimensions: - Tall vase: H 23 cm (9.06 in), W 13 cm (5.12 in), D 13 cm (5.12 in) - Smaller vase: H 19 cm (7.48 in), W 11 cm (4.33 in), D 11 cm (4.33 in) - Ashtray: H 5 cm (1.97 in), W 17 cm (6.69 in), D 17 cm (6.69 in)
