Chinese Export Porcelain Double Peacock Soup Tureen, Cover and Stand, Circa 1765

Located in Downingtown, PA

Chinese Export Porcelain Double Peacock Soup Tureen, Cover and Stand, Circa 1765 This Chinese export famille rose soup tureen, cover and stand is painted with the celebrated “Double Peacock” pattern, one of the most distinguished designs produced for the European market in the Qianlong period. The oval stand, its shaped rim scalloped in gentle lobes, and the oval tureen, its swelling bombé sides rising from a spreading molded foot, are decorated en suite with a pair of peacocks perched upon pierced garden rockwork amid flowering peonies, chrysanthemums and leafy branches. The birds are finely rendered, their plumage worked in rich tones of green, blue, ochre and iron-red, the long tail feathers sweeping across the white ground, while a profusion of blossoms in deep rose-pink, coral and soft green fills the surrounding field. The low domed cover repeats the floral decoration and is surmounted by a boldly modeled pomegranate knop in iron-red and gilt, and the sides of the tureen are flanked by a pair of hare’s-head handles, also in iron-red with gilt spotting. A spearhead border frames the central composition of the stand and runs around the foot of the tureen, while the rims are banded with a running gilt trellis on an iron-red ground, interrupted at intervals by reserved panels of underglaze blue scrolling ornament that lend depth and vivacity to the palette. Dimensions Overall, assembled: Width: 15 inches (38.1 cm) Depth: 11¾ inches (29.8 cm) Height: 9¾ inches (24.8 cm) Tureen: Width: 13¼ inches (33.7 cm) Depth: 9¼ inches (23.5 cm) Height: 9 inches (22.9 cm) Stand: Width: 15 inches (38.1 cm) Depth: 11¾ inches (29.8 cm) Height: 2½ inches (6.4 cm) Provenance Private collection. Condition Good antique condition throughout, the vibrant famille rose enamels, underglaze blue borders and extensive gilt highlights remaining remarkably bright, crisp and well preserved across all three components. Historical Context The “Double Peacock” pattern, the Serviço dos Pavões of Portuguese and Brazilian collectors, is among the most celebrated of all Chinese export famille rose designs. It was produced in great quantity for the open market, an estimated twenty thousand pieces between about 1750 and 1795, and has always been particularly prized in Portugal, Brazil and England; the Brazilian authority José de Almeida Santos, in his Manual do Colecionador Brasileiro (1950), ranked it the finest of the famille rose services made to European commission and singled out the drawing of the birds. Much of its renown rests on a royal association. The Portuguese royal house owned a service of the design, and when the French invasion of November 1807 drove the Braganza court into exile, the Prince Regent Dom João, King João VI from 1816, sailed for Brazil with his mother, Queen Maria I, and the court, carrying his Chinese porcelain services...

English Bone China Trompe L’oeil Melon Tureen, Probably Minton, Circa 1830

English Bone China Trompe L’oeil Melon Tureen, Probably Minton, Circa 1830

By Minton

Located in Downingtown, PA

English Bone China Trompe L’oeil Melon Tureen, Probably Minton, Circa 1825–1835 This English bone china tureen and cover is modeled in trompe l’oeil as a ripe melon, oval and ribbed, its segments washed in bands of bright green and yellow over a netted, pebbled skin molded in relief. The cover is surmounted by a gnarled stalk handle, its end cut square to show the rings of the stem, from which spring curling tendrils and heart-shaped serrated leaves veined in puce, lying across the top of the fruit, and a short stalk is modeled at one end of the body. Both parts are glazed plain white inside, and the cover seats on a raised inner flange. The model follows the melon tureens made at Meissen and taken up at Chelsea and Longton Hall in the 1750s, and the flat base carries a faint crossed-swords mark in underglaze blue in imitation of Meissen. Marks of this kind were used on English bone china in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, when the rococo taste for naturalistic table wares returned to fashion. Minton applied a pseudo-Meissen crossed swords in underglaze blue to its ornamental porcelain of this period, as on the flower-encrusted pen tray presented to Princess Victoria on her fourteenth birthday in 1833, now in the Royal Collection, and the factory’s surviving design books of the early 1830s record ornaments and dishes filled with modeled porcelain fruits and vegetables. Coalport, whose encrusted wares are often confused with Minton’s, also used a crossed-swords mark, and remains the principal alternative. Another tureen of this model was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, on 26 September 1998, to the decorator Mario Buatta. Dimensions Height: 5 inches (12.7 cm) Width: 6¼ inches (15.9 cm) Depth: 4 inches (10.2 cm) Marks Faint crossed swords in underglaze blue on the flat base, in imitation of the Meissen mark. Provenance Private Maryland Collection Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge Condition Excellent, the green and yellow enamels bright and glossy; a tiny chip to one side of the cover rim, invisibly repaired. References Geoffrey A. Maiolica Tureen by Felice Clerici or Pasquale Rubati, Milan, c. 1770
Maiolica Tureen by Felice Clerici or Pasquale Rubati, Milan, c. 1770

Maiolica Tureen by Felice Clerici or Pasquale Rubati, Milan, c. 1770

By Felice Clerici, Pasquale Rubati

Located in Milano, IT

Maiolica tureen “allo struzzo” (ostrich decoration) Milan, Felice Clerici or Pasquale Rubati factory, circa 1750-1780 Measures: 9.25 in x 12.79 in x 10.23 in (cm 23.5 x cm 32.5 x cm 26) lb 4.78 (kg 2.17) State of conservation, a felûre consolidated inside with slight edge chipping restored. In Milan in the 18th century two Majolica warehouses were opened, the first, by Felice Clerici, in 1745, the second in 1756 by Pasquale Rubati. Traditionally this type of decoration has been attributed to the Pasquale Rubati factory. In reality the motif “allo struzzo”, one of the clearest examples of how the taste for chinoiserie met with considerable success during the 18th century, had been produced, in specimens of greater or lesser quality, by both Milanese manufactories. This Maiolica tureen has a swollen and ribbed oval bowl, rests on an extroflexed foot and shows stirrup handles. The tri-color ornament, in the typical tones of Japanese "Imari" decorations, shows an idealized oriental landscape that develops around a perforated rock and has a willow tree with long lance-shaped leaves framing the long-legged bird figure. The ornamentation is enhanced by decorative elements such as butterflies, small florets and a vase with a thin flowery stem. The lid is ribbed with a pear-shaped knob on top. The decoration was called in the Milanese manufactories "allo struzzo" (ostrich decoration) and this refers to the oriental figure Xian He or the crane, symbol of longevity, here losing its symbolic value. It is hypothesized that among some 16th century engravings...

Located in Amsterdam, Noord Holland

A very nicely made 18th century Kangxi tureen. Redecorated in Europe. Old inventory number at the base. There was a small yellow sticker at the lid, which is removed now. We take a look at Amsterdams Bont porcelain from China. A relatively unknown niche of Chinese porcelain from ca 1680-1740 that was partly decorated in Europe. Because mainstream Chinese collectors have yet to discover the historical significance of these wares they are relatively easy to find in Holland. While also being highly interesting and of often super quality and with an amazing array of decorations. Amsterdams Bont is a name given to porcelain partly decorated in the Netherlands (most likely in cities like Delft, Haarlem, Makkum). Because Amsterdam was at this moment in time the trade centre of the western world and also of the porcelain trade a lot of this over enamelling was probably commissioned by Amsterdam merchants, to reap higher profits on otherwise boring Chinese wares. The name Amsterdam Bont probably derives from the fact that these type of decorated ware was sold by Amsterdam Merchants. Amsterdam Bont consists of either blanc or under glaze blue decorated Chinese porcelain of basic quality, that was later enhanced with red and sometimes other colours in the Netherlands. It must not be mistaken for other type of Chinese & Japanese blanc wares decorated in Europe. Those we simply call European Decorated Chinese porcelain. Amsterdam Bont really is easily recognisable by its colour and style. An interesting side note is that a similar process of overdecorating with red was done in London in more or less the same colours. Method of manufacturing. This enhancemend was done on “petit feux” or small fire at a lower temperature. This technique of baking enamels on a lower temperature that was perfected in the Delft around 1670-1680 to compete with the colourfull Japanese porcelain of the time. At the turn of the 17th c Chinese porcelain...

Jean-Baptiste-Francois Chéret Louis XV Silver Tureen

By Cheret Francois

Located in New Orleans, LA

Crafted by French master silversmith Jean-Baptiste-François Chéret, this period Louis XV tureen boasts exceptional decoration, including delicate and refined engraving, shell and acanthus accents, and a remarkably detailed cast finial of cauliflower, celery and carrots. Thanks to a very strict guild system, French silver has always been among the finest in the world. It was also subject to the various fiscal crises of the late 17th and 18th centuries, as both Louis XIV and Louis XV issued edicts demanding that all silver be brought to the mint for melting, with the resulting coin to be used to replenish depleted state treasuries. French silver from this extravagant era survives only in relatively small quantities, and is thus in great demand by collectors. The tureen is marked on the interior lid and underside. The large object charge mark identified as a crown over the letter “A...
