Antique Hand Carved Nuristani Storage Chest
Antique Hand Carved Nuristani Storage Chest

Antique Hand Carved Nuristani Storage Chest

Located in Aartselaar, BE

This antique chest is unique and beautiful, likely handmade in the Nuristan province of northeast Afghanistan. We estimate it to be crafted in the late 19th to early 20th century. It was built from wood using traditional wedged mortise and tenon joinery, indicating its origin. The front panel is richly adorned with hand-chiseled tribal motifs of stars and flowers. The surface of the wood is beautifully textured. Its natural patina perfectly suits the wabi-sabi aesthetic—celebrating imperfection, timeworn beauty, and authenticity. The chest’s tribal design feels raw yet sophisticated, combining ancient craftsmanship with a timeless sense of modernity. This handmade piece would integrate beautifully into a variety of interiors: it can ground a minimalist or contemporary space with its earthy authenticity, lend soulful warmth to a wabi-sabi-inspired room, and enrich eclectic, bohemian, or globally curated environments. Its strong, geometric lines and understated ornamentation make it highly adaptable, whether used as a statement entryway chest...

Pair of 19th Century French Louis XVI Painted Confiturier Cabinets
Pair of 19th Century French Louis XVI Painted Confiturier Cabinets

Pair of 19th Century French Louis XVI Painted Confiturier Cabinets

Located in Dallas, TX

Elegant in their tall, narrow proportions, this handsome pair of antique confiturier cabinets combines restrained Louis XVI design with a beautifully time-worn painted finish. Crafted in northern France circa 1880, each cabinet stands on four tapered and fluted legs beneath a carved apron enriched with a repeating vertical motif. The façade features a shallow upper drawer framed with molded panels and centered by a circular carved medallion fitted with a decorative metal pull. Below, a single cabinet door is embellished with a recessed geometric panel accented at the corners with hand-carved floral rosettes. Fluted corner pilasters and molded side panels reinforce the neoclassical character of the design, while the original-style iron escutcheons and keys add further period detail. Both cabinets retain a wonderfully textured, distressed painted finish in soft blue-gray and pale gray tones, with natural wear and traces of the underlying wood showing through along the edges and moldings. The backs remain unpainted, revealing the traditional wood construction and warm aged patina. Originally designed as confituriers, or French jelly cabinets...

Large and Extensively Carved Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival Cabinet

Large and Extensively Carved Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival Cabinet

Located in Morristown, NJ

Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival cabinet, with interior shelf and central door. Heavily adorned with carved panels to front and sides. The front is comprised of panels flanking a central door. To each side of the door are two beautifully carved panels. The door has brass hinges and escutcheon. It locks with the key retained. The carving is mirrored on both sides of the piece, each comprising five carved panels. The red undertones suggest that this is a chestnut rather than an oak piece. The overall structure owes much to the Gothic Revival movement of 19th century France, with a nod to Renaissance Revival. The door panel is dominated by a lovely example of Gothic tracery in the form of a half moon “window...

1980s Charles Cobb Studio California Cherub Chest Figured Acacia and Lacquer
1980s Charles Cobb Studio California Cherub Chest Figured Acacia and Lacquer

1980s Charles Cobb Studio California Cherub Chest Figured Acacia and Lacquer

By Charles B. Cobb

Located in Camden, ME

A Charles Cobb chest hand made at his Californian studio in the early 1980s This extraordinary studio-crafted “Cherub Chest” by Charles Cobb, created in the 1980s, exemplifies the poetic fusion of art and function that defined the American Studio Craft movement. Cobb, who established his studio in Northern California in the mid-1970s, gained recognition for one-of-a-kind sculptural furniture pieces that conveyed personal symbolism through expressive carving and masterful materiality. Hand-carved in figured Acacia wood, the chest features lyrical, chiseled details across its surfaces—abstract cherubic forms that subtly emerge from the grain, inviting touch and contemplation. The drawer fronts are edged in cerulean blue, providing a vivid contrast to the organic warmth of the wood. Inside, drawer boxes in curly maple and walnut speak to Cobb’s devotion to craftsmanship, even in hidden elements. Two sculptural rosewood pulls anchor cabinet doors on a medium white-painted body, balancing the composition with quiet elegance. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Cobb was commissioned for significant private and public projects, with work collected by discerning clients across California, New York, and Japan. His pieces are held in both residential and institutional collections, appreciated for their narrative depth and finely wrought form. The Cherub Chest is a rare, example of Cobb’s vision—where furniture becomes symbolic, sculptural, and enduring. A museum-worthy piece for collectors of American studio furniture, sculptural design, and 20th-century West Coast craftsmanship. The profile of this beautifully hand crafted piece reminds me of a bouquet of flowers gracefully drooping over the edge of a large container. The chest is from his series of one off cabinets titled Cherub Chests...
