About the Item

George I Walnut Gaming Table, attributed to Giles Grendey, circa 1725 A rare English George I figured walnut gaming table, attributed to the workshop of Giles Grendey, London, circa 1725. Distinguished by its sophisticated concertina action, unusually extensive arrangement of gaming wells, and original hoof-form feet, the table was likely produced as a special commission. When closed, the table functions as a narrow console or side table. The shaped folding top is veneered with carefully selected and book-matched figured walnut, bordered by crossbanding and narrow feather-banding. Rounded projecting corners and a molded edge follow the complex outline of the playing surface concealed within. The hinged top opens to reveal a green baize-lined gaming surface furnished with eight recessed wells. Four large circular corner wells alternate with four smaller oval wells positioned at the center of each side. The circular recesses could accommodate candlesticks, drinking glasses, or gaming accessories, while the oval wells were intended for coins, counters, or other playing markers. This elaborate arrangement allows the table to accommodate multiple players and is considerably more developed than the standard four-player English card table. The top is supported by an ingenious double-gate concertina mechanism. The two rear legs open through articulated wooden frames, providing balanced support beneath the expanded playing surface. The gate construction, secondary oak timbers, and extensive veneering are characteristic of accomplished London cabinetmaking during the George I period. The table stands on four boldly shaped cabriole legs terminating in unusual dark hoof-form feet. These distinctive feet appear original and are consistently incorporated into all four legs. Their rarity, together with the specialized gaming interior, suggests that the table was individually commissioned rather than produced as a standard workshop pattern. The attribution to the workshop of Giles Grendey is based on the quality and selection of the figured walnut, controlled crossbanding, sophisticated folding construction, and relationship to documented gaming furniture associated with his London workshop. Grendey was among the leading English cabinetmakers of the early 18th century and was known for substantial bespoke commissions produced for British and international patrons. The green base is a later replacement. The table retains a warm, developed surface with age-related shrinkage, marks, veneer repairs, and restorations consistent with approximately 300 years of use. Structurally sound and ready to place. Dimensions closed: 28.75 inches high × 35 inches wide × 15.25 inches deep Dimensions open: 35 inches wide × 31 inches deep Circular wells: approximately 5.5 inches in diameter Oval wells: approximately 4 × 3 inches
